Begin in the currency of the contract
Record tuition in the currency used by the university, usually shown in its official fee documentation. An estimate in rupees is useful for family planning, but exchange-rate movements can change what you pay. Keep the original-currency figure alongside any conversion and record when that conversion was made.
Confirm whether the quoted amount is annual, semester-based or for the entire programme. Ask what can change in later years and which document controls the final price.
Build the budget in layers
| Budget layer | What to include |
|---|---|
| Academic | Tuition, compulsory course charges, equipment and any examination fees. |
| Living | Accommodation, food, local transport, phone and everyday essentials. |
| Before departure | Documents, translations, visa-related costs, travel and initial purchases. |
| Annual extras | Insurance where required, trips home, seasonal clothing and renewals. |
| Contingency | Currency movements, unexpected travel and changes in personal circumstances. |
Read an “all-inclusive” quote closely
Ask for each inclusion and exclusion in writing. Does accommodation cover the whole year? Are food and utilities included? Which charges are paid to the university and which to a service provider? What is refundable, and under what circumstances?
Request a year-by-year schedule rather than multiplying the first-year figure by the programme length. Compare like-for-like room types and programme language. University websites can carry documents for different intakes; ask the institution to identify the fee order that applies to you.
Plan how the money will move
Before payment, verify the beneficiary and payment instructions directly with the institution or the authorised recipient. Discuss international-transfer availability, charges and documentation with your bank. Keep payment receipts and allow for processing time. Avoid relying on one payment method for every future expense.
Use official university fee pages to establish the academic cost, then build the personal living budget around your actual accommodation and habits. We can help you turn the information into a clearer comparison during counselling.
Finance with room to breathe
If a loan or scholarship is part of the plan, understand its conditions and when funds become available. Do not assume an award, loan sanction or a future part-time income until it is confirmed. A sustainable budget should let you focus on the demands of medical study.
